I've loved Morphine (the band, not the drug) since college. Saw them live at the Granada when in Lawrence, Kansas in the late '90s. Mark Sandman seemed flabbergasted to be there and kept saying, "Lawrence ... Kansas?"
I love Morphine and get so excited when I hear them on KMHD! I think Derek Smith plays them during The Morning Session. I hear that sax and know it immediately and dance around. Thanks for reminding me how much I love them!
And yes, Mr. G, like you, for many years I found the reduced string bass and musuc a bit unsettling, then once, under proper circumstances, I fell in love with its starkness.
Once again, we’re on the same plane. I too, listened to morphine and became acquainted with their drummer Jerome Dupree on a drum forum 20+ years ago. We met in person and dined together at SXSW in 2006. We had both just commissioned boutique drum sets of the same type, different sizes, from the same custom maker and had both sold the kits due to dissatisfaction with the sound shortly after getting the drums, so we had a lot to talk about. I didn’t ask one question about Mark. Rip.
I was a fan of morphine in the 90s... they played at my college's spring festival in 1999 and I missed it because I had work. never got to see 'em.
I first heard them on the soundtrack to a film. Maybe David Lynch? Tempus bloody fugit!
I first heard them in a film too - Spanking the Monkey
Oh, yes! That was a fun and uncomfortable film.

Jerome is a great guy and is not only a world class drummer but really fun to hang with!
