Pulse! wrote the first review of my early 90s fanzine, in a column by Lori Fleming, and even included a photo of it. It might have been the most exciting thing that had ever happened to me by age 23.
The CD era really does deserve some respect. I still have all mine. It's a portable, robust format that has solid sound quality, if lacking some of the charms of analog.
I have a bunch of vinyl too, but I don't double them. An album on CD is sufficient.
I sure do miss 90s record stores both indies and even Tower which did have a pretty deep catalog. No algo can match the ear of dedicated record collector. We now have quantity over quality.
I loved that magazine when I worked at the store in the '80s and a decade later worked with cool Marc Weidenbaum on a few cover (Isaac Hayes, Gang Starr) stories. I wrote a piece earlier this year about the first NYC store. That place was paradise. https://wearethemutants.com/2023/04/12/on-4th-and-broadway-remembering-tower-records/
LOVE that piece, Michael!
Thank you Aaron. It was a fun piece to write.
Thanks for the walk back in time. Going to Tower was always highly anticipated.
