And Aaron, I'm pretty sure Option is not around, but in the mid 1980's, it was my salvation and my introduction to SO many bands I still enjoy today. First place I heard of Jandek, although I'm not into him. He's from my hometown and I find it highly inspiring that he has created and marketed, apparently of his own doing, and achieved such underground popularity world wide. There are Jandek cover bands worldwide, or so I understand. The Golden Palominos...I never would have heard of them until decades later. The GP's second and third album with some big guest star singers including Lydon and Stipe singing their tunes are excellent and highly recommended and available on the tube.
My question to you, noted music scholar, is whether an online archive exists for Option?
In any event, great article. I'm not sure how I missed it because I'm a pavement fan.
thanks groovemaster! always glad to know these stories resonate with you. option does not exist anymore, and the mag doesn't have its own web presence, sadly. some authors have archived their own material on rock's back pages, a few on their own websites. most is locked away in paper back issues, though they did publish a really fun book anthology that's worth ordering!
So cool to see this story after all these years. That Kennel Club show was amazing. And getting to know Gary Young was such a joy and a wild ride...
thank you again for letting me share it with the world, Jason! people love it.
Great piece to start my weekend off. Thanks for posting!
Great read to wake up too. Aaron, great job in selecting this fine guest author.
