Happy birthday Aaron! Love this post!! I miss the magic and mystery of this time—when it took time and effort to discover a band, when you didn’t have a band’s catalog, bio, and history at your fingertips.
Happy Birthday, brother! What a great piece. I was out in LA often during this period and also caught some of these bands in Houston and Austin. Bad Religion. L7. Lolol Sandy Duncan’s Eye. Like Jamie below, lo, it’s been many a year since I thought of Sandy Duncan’s eye. I will celebrate my favorite music writer’s birthday by listening to these tunes and rocking out and wondering wtf all the years between then and now went so fast. Oh, I agree about your points in the fine writing as well about this time and this genre.
A Houston album similar to this was released in same time period called HOUSTON LOUD. It had a bunch of similar groups tunes by popular Houston punk/underground/Grunge pioneers but the one I adore was written by my late guitar playing buddy Kirk Carr and performed by the band he was in, Non-Dairy Creamers, called “Yo Gramma knows you’re an acid head”. Great tune. Miss you, Kirk. RIP The world has one less great talent without Kirk, my bandmate in many bands and dear friend.
Another great band then who sort of were a bit harder version of soundgarden was Deadhorse. J.R. Delgado, was the bassist for Deadhorse and owned the big local club south of downtown Houston in an industrial district called The Axiom. I think JR put out the Houston Loud album. I really liked Deadhorse and opened for them a few times.
I’ll note Deadhorse was around before Soundgarden.
I haven't heard Sandy Duncan's Eye in a looooong time. Flipside put out some great time capsule comps.
Great work as always!

Holy shit. I had this record! Or maybe on cassette. Big fan of Sandy Duncan's Eye!
