Hey Everyone,
If you’re reading this, you probably read my music posts at Alive in the Nineties. For four years, I’ve cranked out music stories about everything from my Depeche Mode adolescence to the first show of the first Lollapalooza tour. And I’ve done it at no cost to my readers.
I’m now asking you, dear readers, to consider paying just $1 a month to read my future monthly ’90s posts.
Just one dollar: That’s right. Less than the price of a good street taco. Substack won’t let me charge $1 per month by clicking a “Subscribe” button. It won’t allow a $12 annual subscription either. It has rules. So, to bypass Substack’s limitations:
You can Venmo me $12 @AaronGilbreath
Include your email address for me, please.
Or PayPal $12 a prowlinggilamonster [at] gmail [dot] com
Include your email address for me.
Choose friends and family so they don’t charge a service fee.
I’ll add you as a paid annual subscriber on the backend and you’re good to go.
My logic: It’s a huge amount of work for us to do this $1 transaction each month—you making the payment, me managing data on the backend, subscriber by subscriber to bypass Substack’s limitations—so I’m asking to simplify everything with a $12 annual subscription. (Note: If $12 still is too much for your income, just message me.)
Why just one dollar a month? A lot of us readers already subscribe to other newsletters, and that adds up. I want Alive in the Nineties to remain accessible to everyone who still reads it. A dollar each month is something I believe nearly all of my subscribers can afford.
Alive in the Nineties gave the world a book-length exploration of the mysterious proto-grunge band Cat Butt. Sure, no one asked for that, but when they got it, they were like Yessss.
Alive in the Nineties told you how Nirvana fans use AI to imagine where Nirvana’s music might have gone if Cobain had lived.
It told you the story of the Meat Puppets’ Kirkwood brothers reuniting after years apart.
Maybe one day it will celebrate these awesome lopsided haircuts, which I love:
$1 per month gets you access to the Alive in the Nineties monthly piece. Alive in the Nineties will keep cranking out passion mixed with nostalgia mixed with fuzz pedals and lots of Butthole Surfers references. MTV 120 Minutes? Check. The Breeders, Pavement, New Zealand’s 3Ds and Bruce Licher’s desert soundtrack Scenic? Check.
So, if you like Alive in the Nineties, please support my efforts. It’s a heavy lift, but I do it for the people who appreciate it, and that’s you.
Thanks for considering!
Cheers,
Aaron
I just learned that you can’t mention Cat Butt in a payment note, Venmo will not allow it!
I used to think I would suffer from brain fog for the rest of my life..."𝐛𝐮𝐭" this changed everything.... https://t.co/5BP0qdMGnS
