I love how small town communities will figure out some way to save the kids from the boredom of small towns. The grownups DO understand it turns out.....

Wow. Makes me nostalgic for my blacked out 90s youth. Reminds me of a placed called the Cobalt Cafe in the Canoga Park neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley. Doesn't exist anymore.

Great piece, Candace. I hung out at a similar place in Northern KY in my eighth and ninth grade years in the early 80s. The Canteen was in the basement of an old military armory that was turned into a community gym. On Fridays and Saturdays, the basement turned into a teen dance place, drawing kids from all over the area. You captured the vibe of a scene like that so well. Looking forward to reading more of your writing!

This was really cool to read. I'm not a child of the 90s but my son was and reading this made me think about some of the spots he'd hang out. You did a great job of conveying a sharp mental picture of what it must have looked like.

I love this and it made me cry.
