Hey Aaron, this is Jonathan Zwickel, the writer who compiled the Lolla oral history for SPIN in 2011. This is a really powerful piece of writing--personal, historical, descriptive... Glad I came across it!
Hey Jonathan, what a nice surprise. It means a lot to hear you enjoyed my piece! Your oral history remains one of the greatest things written about the tour. I'm indebted and glad you had the foresight to finally gather the details from all of those participants and paint such a clear, fun picture. Oral histories are a favorite form of mine--all those voices and personalities. So thank you for your piece, too.
Yes I was. Lived in South Scottsdale. By when you write of getting your drivers license, I’m thinking I’m close to 10 years older than you. There was a place near Big Surf, too, it seems, where we’d go see bands. Seems like it was kind of secret. There was a mosh pit - seems like it was a small building. Can’t quite picture it. Lol… can remember my brother having to pull me out of that pit a couple of times. Moved to Seattle not too long after that first Lollapalooza. Been around here ever since.

I was there! It was all such a blur. For some reason, I went on kind of a deep dive, looking for some memories, and you provided them beautifully. You brought it back into focus (a bit - it was hot). Thank you! It was nuts - in an amazing way - and I just shook my head as I read this. I was at that RHCP show at Big Surf, too. So, coming upon that pic just blew me away. This made my night.
Hey Suzan, I'm thrilled this story brought so many great, hazy memories back for you. Good feelings all around. Speaking of Big Surf, I'm getting video of a Meat Puppets show from Big Surf digitized to share on YouTube. Were you there, too?
